OPUTE thermal interface materials for LED lighting, showing a thin thermal grease layer applied between an LED circuit board and aluminum heat sink

Material Selection

Three Thermal Interface Solutions for LED Lighting

The thermal interface material is positioned on the non-emitting side of the LED PCB or metal-core PCB, between the board and a metal housing or heat sink.

Thermal grease between LED PCB backside and aluminum heat sink

Thermal Grease

A thin thermal grease layer fills microscopic surface irregularities between the back of the LED PCB or MCPCB and an aluminum heat sink.

Typical fit: Best for close-fitting, mechanically secured assemblies.

Thermal silicone pads between LED PCB backside and aluminum heat sink

Thermal Silicone Pads

Compressible silicone pads fill designed gaps between the back of the LED PCB and the aluminum housing or heat sink.

Typical fit: Suitable for controlled gap thickness and custom die-cut shapes.

Thermally conductive tape between LED PCB backside and aluminum heat sink

Thermally Conductive Tape

Adhesive thermal tape bonds a suitable LED PCB or MCPCB to an aluminum profile while providing a heat-transfer interface.

Typical fit: Use where the adhesive bond meets mechanical and thermal requirements.

01

Thermal Grease

Apply a thin, controlled layer to the metal mating surface or PCB backside, then assemble the LED board to the heat sink.

Engineering Guide

How to Choose the Right Material

Material Typical Interface Selection Considerations Assembly Approach
Thermal Grease Very thin mating gaps Contact pressure, pump-out, oil bleeding and application control Dispense or spread on mating surface; secure PCB mechanically
Thermal Silicone Pad Designed or uneven gaps Thickness, compression, hardness, contact area and thermal resistance Die-cut pad between board backside and heat sink
Thermal Tape Bonded thin interfaces Adhesion, substrate compatibility, bond line, temperature and long-term loading Apply tape to cleaned mating surfaces and press to bond
Material suitability must be validated on the final LED assembly. Thermal conductivity alone does not determine real-world cooling performance.
